Safety Precautions While Doing Plumbing - Part II

In the previous post we covered some tips regarding plumbing codes, electricity, chemicals, and power tools. It always is worth the effort to take time to learn about the operation of tools and to have a safe setup before getting started on a plumbing project.
In today's post we will continue with more safety tips before embarking on your next plumbing project!
- When using a drill, make sure to use a drill that has an auxiliary handle. This will allow you to control the torque especially when using bits that are larger in size. Like mentioned in the previous post, make sure that you pay close attention to how a tool works. Take time to analyze the workings of your drill and also read the manufacturer's instructions. Remember: taking the time to do this can make the difference between an injury and a successful injury less project.
- Next, when working with chemicals and other agents, or when working with soldering, remember to use and wear rubber gloves/work gloves. You may not be part of a medical staff, but doing plumbing work also requires its corresponding PPE.
- Another tip regarding using the correct PPE. When working with toxic substances and solvents, make sure to the necessary filtering respirator. In addition, when working with tools that create dust or when sanding, make sure to use a face mask.
- A final tip for today is that, when working with a gas appliance, do not, I repeat, do not, turn it on if you smell gas. In addition to not turning such appliance on, also do not touch any electrical switch and/or use a cell phone in such conditions. Step outside and call the gas provider, such as PGE in California. They will come and check that everything is ok. Capisce? Good!
