Types of Flooring Over Radiant Heating

In the last post we talked about the different types of radiant floor heating systems and about the different installation types for radiant floor heating systems.

Today, we discuss the best types of flooring to be installed over radiant heating systems. Let's get started:

1) Tile Flooring - porcelain tile flooring and ceramic tile flooring both work very well with radiant heating systems as they are both excellent conductors of heat. In addition, these two types of flooring do not expand or contract as much as other flooring types. Thus, they do not result in cracking.

2) Laminate flooring is another type of flooring that works very well with radiant floor heating systems. Laminate flooring is designed to look like solid hardwood flooring. The difference is in price as laminate flooring can be much cheaper than solid hardwood flooring. One huge advantage is that laminate flooring does not expand and contract as much as other floor types.

3) Natural stone flooring - granite, travertine, sandstone are great conductors of heat. It can expensive but it can work very well with your radiant heating system.

4) Vinyl flooring, contract with the others, may not work as well with a radiant heating system as the heat may damage the vinyl or may cause it to release some chemicals. It can also swell and shrink with the heating/cooling process.

5) Carpet flooring is also another suboptimal flooring type for radiant heating systems as it can prevent heat to be transferred to your home.
