Hydronic Heating vs Forced Air

Good morning everyone! In the two previous articles we have analyzed both the benefits of hydronic heating systems as well as the different types of hydronic heating systems that there are.

In this article we will compare traditional forced air systems vs hydronic heating systems. What are the advantages of one over the other?

Well, let's jump right into it.

First of all, forced air heating systems, as the name suggests, are systems that rely on air to do the transfer of heat to the rooms of the home. On the other hand, hydronic systems depend on water or steam to transfer that same heat that is required throughout the home.

Let's analyze several categories:

COMFORT

In this category we have a clear winner and the winner is hydronic heating. Hydronic heating provides better/more even heat distribution around the home. In contrast, forced air systems often do not do this as they produce gushes of hot air and cold air around the houses which can reduced home comfort. As we saw in the last article, there are different systems of hydronic heating and some are better than others in increasing efficiency.

HEAT TRANSFER MEDIUM

To transfer heat, as we have said, hydronic systems use water while a forced air system used air by the use of powerful fans that passes the air through a heating chamber before this air is then pushed to the home.

In contrast, in hydronic system, water is heated at a boiler and then it is sent to the rest of the home (or rooms that need heating) through metal pipes. Each room that needs heating has installed a radiator or baseboard heater that uses the heat from the pipes by distributing it to the room.

INSTALLATION COST

In this category, the winner in lesser cost is the forced air system as doesn't need the additional plumbing and radiators.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

In terms of efficiency, hydronic heating systems are the clear winner as water is a better heat transfer medium than air. One important factor here is the quality of the design.
